Unveiling the Glorified Christ and the Urgency of His Return
Revelation 1 opens with a powerful unveiling—not just of end-time events, but of the person of Jesus Christ in His glory. The chapter introduces this book as a divine communication from God the Father, given to Jesus, shown to His servants through an angel, and recorded by John. It emphasizes the immediacy and relevance of the message: “things which must shortly come to pass.” The blessing promised to those who read, hear, and keep the words of this prophecy underscores its importance for believers today.
John greets the seven churches in Asia with grace and peace from the triune God—He “which is, and which was, and which is to come” (the Father), the seven Spirits (the Holy Spirit in fullness), and Jesus Christ, who is revealed as:
The faithful witness (truth-bearer)
The first begotten of the dead (resurrected Lord)
The prince of the kings of the earth (reigning King)
We’re reminded that Jesus loved us, washed us from our sins in His blood, and made us kings and priests unto God. This profound identity sets the stage for our calling as worshipers and witnesses in a broken world.
Verses 7–8 thunder with certainty: Jesus is coming again. Every eye will see Him—even those who pierced Him. This event will cause worldwide mourning, revealing the weight of rejected truth. Christ declares Himself as the Alpha and Omega, eternal and almighty, tying the past, present, and future to His sovereign rule.
John’s vision continues with a personal account: exiled on Patmos for the Word of God, he was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day. He hears a voice like a trumpet and turns to see Jesus in His glorified state—dressed in priestly garments, His hair white as wool (eternity and purity), eyes as a flame of fire (omniscience), feet like brass (judgment), and voice like many waters (powerful and majestic). He holds seven stars in His hand and stands among seven lampstands, showing His presence with His churches.
Jesus reveals Himself as the First and the Last, the One who lived, died, and is alive forevermore. He holds the keys of death and hell, affirming His absolute authority. John is commanded to write what he has seen, what is now, and what will take place. The mystery of the seven stars and lampstands is explained—they are the angels (or messengers) and churches respectively.
