The Lord’s Table is where the Lord’s food is served and eaten. It is the exclusive preserve of those who are shepherded by Him. Those whom God shepherds have their souls restored by Him, and He faithfully accompanies them—even as they journey through the valley of the shadow of death—because they have drunk from His cup. This and much more they enjoy (see Psalm 23:1–6).
The Lord’s Table has only one menu. Jesus Himself reveals it:
“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.”
(John 4:34, NKJV, emphasis added)
The Lord’s food is to do the will of the One who sends us and to finish His work. In our context, this means carrying out His apostolic mandate to the letter. It connects doing God’s will directly with work—that is, good works born of obedience.
The soul of an apostle of God in the marketplace finds true satisfaction each time a task is completed in the name of the Lord and in line with His command. One of the ways you know you’ve scored a “heavenly point” in your assignment is the divine satisfaction—a quiet, holy peace—that floods your soul upon completing that task.
Of course, this all comes back to constantly ingesting the Word of God, the bread of life by which all men must live (see Matthew 4:4).
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, Shepherd of my soul, thank You for inviting me to Your Table. Teach me to hunger for the food that truly satisfies—the joy of doing Your will and finishing the work You’ve given me. As I partake of Your Word, let it strengthen me to walk in obedience, even through valleys. May every assignment I complete in Your name bring glory to You and peace to my soul. Amen.
Reflection Prompt:
What specific “work” has the Lord placed in your hands in this season? Are you approaching it as one who eats at the Lord’s Table—fed, led, and satisfied by His will?
